Merchants of Cool Marketing to Youth

-Teenagers are one of the biggest markets
-teens run the economy
-they are given alot of guilt money
-75% of teens have a tv in their room
-1 in 3 have a personal computer
-if you dont understand what teens are thinking and feeling then you will lose
-teens go for what is cool
-they look for the 20% of students that will be followed
-sprite decided to make their drink cool
-they were almost just selling that they understood the culture
-they rappidly grew because they understood the culture
-mtv is a very successful in finding out whats cool
-they talk to the kids and find out whats cool and stuff

A Mcdonalds founder Ray Kroc

-mcdonalds is the best known bramd in the world
-was born in chicago in 1902
-every saturday his mother would scrub the kitchen floor
-was happy to help his mother with housework
-was predicted that he would be in the foods service
-began to see the world as one big place to sell things too
-wasnt bound by normal restraints of teenagers
-if he had an idea there was a way to make it happen
-soon realized that baseball wouldnt make money playing baseball
-didnt like school
-quited school in 1919
-was a born salesman
-really good at selling things
-made sure he looked really proffesional
-he sold paper cups for 16 years
-work was everything to him
-learned everything about what was gopod and bad in the food business
-became the multi mixers salesman
-as he approched 50 years old his work slowed down
-flew to california to see the company that kept buying his mixer machines
-the founders of macdonalds started up drive in restaraunts
-after the war people wanted to get things fast and easy
-they closed their small business and and started a new restaraunt that was way faster
-cut serving time down way faster
-got in a big magazine for their restaraunt
-tons of people came to just see the restaraunt
-Ray Kroc came and saw the potential and wanted to sell them multi mixers
-Less is More
-at 52 he first hears about mcdonalds
-signed a contract so he could sell their meathod
-made sure his restaraunt was spottless
-was cleaning the crevices of the mop ringer
-knew that the store had to be perfect to set the standards for the franchieses he was going to sell
-set out to open up 1000 mcdonalds from coast to coast as his goal
-ended his 39 year marriage with his wife to win over another girl but she wouldn't leave her husband
-married another girl after 2 weeks of marriage
-he was successful because he had a formula
-found a new way to have more controll over the employees
-bought out the mcdonald brothers for 2.7 million dollars
-they wouldn't sell him the first macdonalds so he opened a new macdonalds accross the street and put them out of business
-left it to the franchisees to develope new products because they were better at it
-he wasn't a nice guy
-created a mascot for the company called ronald mcdonald in order to get kids to come to mcdonalds
-eventually won over Jone who he wanted marry his whole life
-bought the sandiego padres
-9684 died of heart failure
-was a giant in the food industry

-Bernie buid anything except for a successful company
-soon learned how very well
-september 1932 his  partner Arthur was born and was 13 years younger
-wanted to become a scientist
-but couldn't afford going to harvard so settled to becoming a pharmacist
-was a co-owner of a pharmacy
-Bernies father died when he was 15
-moved from company to company
-got fired from the company he worked for
-got a call from someone who wanted to start a business with him
-they set up the first home depot in atlantis
-was a slow start but it became super successful
-did not have enough money to stock the entire store
-they used empty containers to make the store look full
-everyone was broke
-trained their employees and paid them well
-the first year they lost almost 1 million dollars
-by the end of the second year they started making profit
-in its first 20 years it grew faster than any other industry including walmart
-they encouraged customers to do large progects
